Not the Eagle Standard. Do the CB Magazine. I am entering TWC today after my suspension, and will try and get you guys in for the CB Mag. The Editor of the ES is Tom Paine, who is not a modder, at least not like members in Consilium Belli.

Which ever. But first we have to have something to show. Hopefully I'll be able to rectify that.

Myapologise Ossie. I am aware that Narnia is also a complete remake of the the game. So you are in the same boat as us. Most of the mods that have been completed were not complete remakes but rather games set on the European continent with units that are found in the Vanilla game.

*** NEWS *** Hello everyone in the TWC who is still interested in our little mod to be. We know it seems like we keep teasing you with announcements of announcements so we wont do that this time. We have nothing new to tell you other than we over on the Inca Team are still hard working little modding gnomes straining our eyes for eyes in the soft blue glow of our computer screens to engineer this mod we have all committed a not to small portion of our life to. For some of us it has become an obsession although our modding time is constantly hampered by real life. Slowly but surely we trudge on. And here we are giving you another taste of what's to come and how we got there. We hope you enjoy. (And if you don't, well thanks for reading the thing at least.) |
*** RESEARCHING FACTIONS *** Its been a long time since our last newsletter but Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the intricate world of the Pre-columbian Americas. Researching this world takes much longer than the European world and sometimes we have to learn how to read a whole new language in order to gain the information we seek. For some that language may be Spanish for others it may be learning how to read Mixtec, Mayan, and Aztec pictorial glyphs in order to learn the date of certain events, the name of a city, or as in the case of the Mixtec ruler for the start of our mod, the name of a person. Our go to resource for much of this knowledge has been the various Codex's compiled by the Spanish soon after the conquest. If it wasn't for the protection of these materials our knowledge of the ancient Aztec, Mayan, and Mixtec world would have perished with them. They have clued us into everything from the uniforms worn by the soldiers to the trade goods in the various provinces of the Aztec empire.
Here is an example of a Codex we recently had to scan through in order to find the name of Ceoxomohtli:
The name Ceoxomotli is the combination of the name of the day number and day sign for the person whose name we are looking for. It seems that the many Mezo-american cultures used these as there given name. In the case of Ceoxomahtli all references refer to him as One Monkey. We combined the day number name: Ce, with the Day sign name: Oxomahtli, to get a name that sounds similar to who this individual would have been called when he was alive. This makes for some difficulty when studying the history of these people since the names and years names repeat often.
At best some of our choices are best guesses which we sometimes eventually discover to be wrong. While researching the town of Teotzapotlan a wrench was thrown into the mix by the appearance of several names of Kings who fought the Aztec. This led us on a furious internet hunt until we realized we had made a mistake. Now, as you'll see below, the name for the Faction leader of the Mixtec-Zapotec at the beginning of the game will be Lord 6 Water, or Atonaltzin as spoken in Nahuatl. We're sure that once the mod is released we will have people telling us that more of our assumptions made through our research is wrong and we freely accept such criticism and will work to correct it so long as those people can back up their arguments with data. We did work quite hard on finding our information and don't want to just throw it away because.
That being said. Here is a preview of the factions and the faction leaders you will have a choice of when you start your Flower Wars campaign circa 1427 of the common calendar. |
MIXTEC- ZAPOTEC | | The Mixtec and Zapotec peoples were contemporaries of the Aztec nations with a culture and history dating back to the golden age of Teotihuacan. Both kingdoms formed alliances and fought many wars against the Aztec. Organizing themselves into leagues or alliances of small royal estates, the Mixtec and Zapotec fused their multiple dynasties and expanded their sphere of control until eventually they dominated the entire region of Oaxaca after the fall of the great Zapotec capital of 'Monte Alban', whose native name has been lost to time. At the time when the Aztec were forming their Triple Alliance the Mixtec-Zapotec Kingdoms were ruled from the Mixtec city of Mitlan and were enjoying a period of strength and growth. | Faction Leader: Atonaltzin [Dzawindanda] The name in brackets is the name as spoken by the Mixtec_Sapotec people. The one outside the brackets is what he was called by the Aztecs. | |
AZTECS |
| According to legend, the Aztec god of the Sun and War, Huitzilopochtli commanded the Mexicas to make a pilgrimage to find and settle in the first place they saw an eagle with a snake in its beak, sitting on a cactus. So in the year 1168 A.D. the Mexica people (later called the Aztecs) started moving south into central Mexico. When they first arrived in the Valley of Mexico they were driven to a swampy island in Lake Texcoco where they found their sign of an eagle atop a cactus and made to pay tribute to the powerful Tepanec people in the city of Azcapotzalco. Around AD 1427 Tenochtitlan and two other cities on Lake Texcoco had had enough of Tepanec domination. After the assassination of the Tenochtitlan King, Chimalpopoca, these cities formed The Triple Alliance and defeated the Tepanecs of Azcapotzalco. The Mexica people of Tenochtitlan quickly became the dominant power in the alliance and it soon began to expand their realm by developing new strategies of war and by employing a very ancient form of sacrificial ritualism to terrorize their enemies into submission and into a vast tribute network. It wasn't long before they began making themselves one of the most powerful and feared civilizations in the Americas. | Faction Leader:Itzcoatl | |
TLAXCALANS |
At about the same time the Mexica people of the Triple Alliance established themselves around the Basin of Mexico, a second group of central Mexican peoples had rejected their hunting and gathering life-style, organized themselves into a federation of city-states, and founded capital cities in the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala; chief among these cities were Tlaxcala, Huexotzingo and Cholula. The rulers of these cities formed the Chichimec Alliance and tried to establish regional hegemony at the same time as the Mexica to the north. A conflict of interests between the Chichimec and the Aztec Triple Alliance over the lands was inevitable and a fierce war would break out that would last for nearly 100 years. | Faction Leader:Xayacamach | There is no image for Xayacamach. He was the father of Xicotencatl who allied with Cortez to help fight the Aztec. One interesting fact about Xayacamach is that he is known for his philosophy and poetry that is much revered and studied in Mexico. A contemporary is to have said;
A beautiful song is heard Xayacamach Tlapeltuetzin raises it these are his flowers |
MAYA |
| The Maya were a collection of independent states that settled in the Yucatan Peninsula of Southern Mexico, and as far south as modern day Honduras. Throughout their history, the Maya were subject to a continual state of rise and falls. Cities would be built up and then abandoned, and then repopulated or abandoned once again as the vagaries of war, politics, trade and resources dictated. Their political structure during their height was similar to the ancient Greeks city-states. The Maya all shared a common religion, language, artistic and architectural traditions. But each state, ruled by hereditary monarchs, was independent from one another and were constantly jockeying for economic and political dominance, either through alliance, marriages or warfare. With nobles having all the power and people feeling the main burden of an every growing society friction, both between classes and between the various noble families, was just beginning to brew in the cities throughout the Mayan lands. | Faction Leader:Quicab Quicab was in control of the Maya at the height of their second rebirth and was beginning to push beyond the traditional borders of the classic era in an attempt to expand his domain and Mayan culture. |
*** RESEARCHING UNITS AND SKINS *** As mentioned above the Aztec, Maya, and Mixtec all left behind various pictorial drawings that tell us how things looked, who payed what in tribute, the history of kings, and tell stories about major events in the cultures history. By looking through these we can see how the uniforms of the various Aztec units looked and which regions may have had them. For the purposes of our mod if a unit appears in the codex of a culture then that unit will be recruitable. Of course you still have to go through the building tree to make it so you are able to recruit that unit. Eventually we may make it so that certain units can only be recruited for certain regions. But in the beginning we may over look this in order to release the mod and begin the major testing phase. Some of the units you will find in the game may look ridiculous such as the tlacatecatl warrior: You would ask yourself how such a unit would be possible or probably on the field of battle. Well we know this because of our research in the Codex's. This warrior is represented the 'Mendoza Codex' which was made post Spanish conquest in order to show the Spanish King what was in his newly conquered lands. The nice thing about this particular Codex is that it is also annotated in Spanish helping us understand a lot of what we see. As you can see below, one of the the tribute gifts to Tenochtitlan at the time of the Spanish Conquest was this peculiar looking uniform and head dress. Our modeler liked it so much it was immediately put into the game. These are just a few examples of the tedious research we are doing in order to create a highly detailed highly accurate as well as a unique enjoyable gaming experience. There are only a few of us working on the mod at the moment, but we are a small dedicated crew who are not willing to sacrifice quality and authenticity for the sake of speed. As you can see by the examples above there is a lot of work to do to find out what to include and what doesn't belong and we will hopefully continue sharing our discoveries and our methods with you as the the weeks and months progress. So stay tuned and keep your eyes open for our Newsletter updates and our long over due announcement of the release of what we have been working on for the latter half of 07' into 08'. We know you wont be disappointed. |
